Gift Giving: Purchase a Puppy for your Child

Many people love dogs. Providing a child with a dog will teach him or her to become a more caring individual as well as teach the child responsibility.

When purchasing a dog for your child, it is important you review the profiles of various dogs’ temperaments and find one that is known to be a good breed with respect to relating to children. Even if you like the dog, it is important to choose a dog breed that has a fine reputation as far as getting along with kids. Certainly, there are a good many dogs that seem to fit nicely within the family; however, unless the dog’s reputation precedes it with respect to being gentle with children, it is best not to consider it. This will narrow down your list as far as possible pet considerations; and there are, besides, so many nice dogs this is probably preferred.

Now that you are only considering dog breeds with a gentle disposition you’ll want to consider size. A dog that is too big might be a good watchdog; however, you don’t want the dog to be so big that if he or she jumps on your children they will be knocked to the ground. It is best to go with a mid-size or smaller dog breed if you can, particularly if your children are very little. The breed you want to find is mild-mannered, protective and takes instruction well.

By purchasing a puppy, you can show your children how important it is to: a) Feed the puppy; b) Comb and groom the dog; c) Exercise the dog, and d) Take it regularly to the vet. By noticing how important all of these activities for the dogs health, it infers the same standards are even more so for humans.
Taking care of the puppy will train your child about the significance of taking care of other living creatures.

Again, dogs are relationship-oriented and are good companions for children. The concept of taking care of another living creature teaches a child early the necessity of being responsible. So not only do you give your child a companion who wishes to please, you also give the gift of demonstrating how important it is to assume responsibility.
